Our advisors work with school faculty to enrich our students by providing them early opportunities to impact others.<\/p>\n<p>SLP is a continuous, voluntary, program that develops competent, capable, and compassionate student leaders by helping them learn to help others. These Clubs enable youth and adult leaders to serve their communities and opens doors for them to change the world. The end goal is to develop \u201cServant Leaders\u201d, a term coined by Robert Greenleaf in 1970. The Servant Leader is one that wants to serve and serve \u201cFirst\u201d. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to \u201cLead.<\/p>\n<p>The MHKC SLP operates in all School District 38 schools except the Monument Academy.\u00a0 We have been operating in District 38 schools since 1993.\u00a0 The levels of SLP served by the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>K-Kids: A leadership program for Elementary school students,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kiwaniskids.org\/\">www.kiwaniskids.org<\/a>:\u00a0 We have five active K-Kids Clubs in D38 elementary schools, open to students in grades 4-6.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>Builders Club (Junior Key Club).\u00a0\u00a0<span role=\"presentation\">A leadership program for Middle and Junior high school students,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buildersclub.org\/\"><span role=\"presentation\">www.buildersclub.org<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0 A leadership program for Middle\/Junior high school students.\u00a0 We have one active Club at Lewis-Palmer Middle School.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>Key Club International: The largest high school service leadership organization in the world,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.keyclub.org\/\">www.keyclub.org<\/a>:\u00a0 We have two active Clubs at Lewis-Palmer HIgh School and Palmer Ridge High School.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>Circle K:\u00a0<span role=\"presentation\">A global service organization for university students<\/span>, aimed at community improvement,\u00a0<span role=\"presentation\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.circlek.org\/\">www.circlek.org<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0We have one Circle K club at the University of Colorado\u2014Colorado Springs (UCCS)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>KC Graduate: A Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis program to connect graduated SLP members with Kiwanis clubs across the world,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcgraduate.org\/\"><span role=\"presentation\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a style=\"color: #3366ff\">www.kcgraduate.org<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students in our SLP clubs lead their own clubs with the assistance of at least one each faculty and Monument Hill Kiwanis Club advisors. The students:<\/p>\n<p>Elect their own officers,<\/p>\n<p>Select their own service projects and charities to support<\/p>\n<p>Perform the elements of planning, preparation &amp; execution of multiple service projects.<\/p>\n<p>While COVID affected SLP in 2020 and 2021, in 2022 the MHKC SLP studentsraised over $11,000 to improve our community.\u00a0 Our expectation is that the 2023-24 school year will see a return to a strong, service-oriented effort from all our SLP clubs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span role=\"presentation\">HOW DO WE DO IT<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span role=\"presentation\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span role=\"presentation\"><em><strong>Operations<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span role=\"presentation\">\u2022<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">\u00a0<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">We work within the regulations of D38, our Charter with Kiwanis International, and the\u00a0<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">MHKC Policies and Procedures for SLP<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span role=\"presentation\">\u2022<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">\u00a0<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">Background checks are required for all D 38 volunteers, yearly. Kiwanis International\u00a0<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">requires a separate background check, every two years. The cost of background checks is reimbursed by MHKC<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span role=\"presentation\">\u2022<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">\u00a0<\/span><span role=\"presentation\">KI provides a document of Youth Protection Guidelines. In operation since the 1970s, this parade has been billed as \u201cThe Biggest Small Town Parade in America.\u201d This parade is our largest Community Service project. Our members start in April, implementing parade plans and coordinating with our partners at the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce, Integrity Bank &amp; Trust, Black Hills Energy, and the Town of Monument, to produce a full-day community celebration. The parade includes a children\u2019s parade, VIPs, veterans units, horses &amp; other animals, bands, churches, businesses, fire trucks, and other exciting units. Participation is open to the public for an entry fee of $65 which helps defray the cost of presenting the parade. The MHKC team manages publicity, coordination with law enforcement, transportation, services, trash, barricades, and unit applications. Our members also supervise parking, parade line-up, children\u2019s parade organization, parade safety marshals, and cleanup. In all, it takes more than 80 of our members to make the parade a success. MHKC volunteers contribute over 1,500 hours to present this event\u2014we\u2019re very proud of this gift to the community.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Our Parade is part of the Tri-Lakes Independence Day Celebration<\/span><\/h3>\n            <\/div>\r\n    \r\n            <div post_id=\"617\" itemcount=\"2\"  header_id=\"header-1778452766634\" id=\"header-1778452766634\" style=\"\" class=\"accordions-head head1778452766634 border-none\" toggle-text=\"\" main-text=\"Children&#039;s Literacy Center\">\r\n                                    <span id=\"accordion-icons-1778452766634\" class=\"accordion-icons\">\r\n                        <span class=\"accordion-icon-active accordion-plus\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-up\"><\/i><\/span>\r\n                        <span class=\"accordion-icon-inactive accordion-minus\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-right\"><\/i><\/span>\r\n                    <\/span>\r\n                    <span id=\"header-text-1778452766634\" class=\"accordions-head-title\">Children's Literacy Center<\/span>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n            <div class=\"accordion-content content1778452766634 \">\r\n                <h3><em><strong>Learning to Read is KEY to Reading to Learn<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, 2\/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.<\/p>\n<p>MHKC makes a difference by providing volunteer tutors to the Children's Literacy Center for elementary students in D38 schools. The program is aimed at K-3 grades.\u00a0 MHKC volunteers tutor selected students twice per week between 5:30-6:30 pm.\u00a0 A background check is required but no specific teaching experience is required.\u00a0 Tutors participate in a half day training session before working with students.\u00a0 Students are screened by the CLC and assigned to volunteers who maintain continuity with a single student through their participation in the program.\u00a0 MHKC volunteers contribute about 500 hours annually to this project. High school DECA students compete in a number of marketing challenges in several specialty areas to earn college scholarship support.\u00a0 Area competitions take place over a 1-2 day period.\u00a0 MHKC volunteers work in pairs to judge student presentations in a number of specialty areas.\u00a0 No specific qualifications are required of volunteers and training is provided to assist them in the judging tasks.\u00a0 Judges are not involved in compiling scores or in selecting competition awards.\u00a0 MHKC volunteers contribute about 30 hours annually to this project.\u00a0 This event takes place on one weekend in early December every year.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Two judging sessions yearly between November and February\u2014No experience necessary<\/span><\/h3>\n            <\/div>\r\n    \r\n            <div post_id=\"617\" itemcount=\"4\"  header_id=\"header-1778452996411\" id=\"header-1778452996411\" style=\"\" class=\"accordions-head head1778452996411 border-none\" toggle-text=\"\" main-text=\"Griffith Centers for Children Chin Up\">\r\n                                    <span id=\"accordion-icons-1778452996411\" class=\"accordion-icons\">\r\n                        <span class=\"accordion-icon-active accordion-plus\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-up\"><\/i><\/span>\r\n                        <span class=\"accordion-icon-inactive accordion-minus\"><i class=\"fas fa-chevron-right\"><\/i><\/span>\r\n                    <\/span>\r\n                    <span id=\"header-text-1778452996411\" class=\"accordions-head-title\">Griffith Centers for Children Chin Up<\/span>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n            <div class=\"accordion-content content1778452996411 \">\r\n                <h3><em><strong>Providing Opportunities for At-Risk Youth<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>MHKC makes a difference by supporting the Griffith Centers for Children Chins Up (GCCCU) in several ways. The GCCCU is a state-wide organization that provides assistance for abused, homeless, and otherwise at-risk children.\u00a0 Centered in five locations around the state, GCCCU provides residential and other services to help rebuild families and provide an opportunity for at-risk youth to return to a more normal, successful, and happy life.<br \/>\nClub members volunteer to serve as mentors for selected students who earn the opportunity to participate in the PPSBD program.\u00a0 MHKC provides cars that the students disassemble, reassemble, and race.\u00a0 MHKC mentors provide assistance to the GCCCU students as they learn about tools, instructions, attention to detail, and competition. The RMYLC is operated by a separate 501(c)(3) organization, the Rocky Mountain Youth Leadership Foundation (<a style=\"color: blue\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rmylf.org\/\">rmylf.org<\/a>). On selected days of the week, MHKC members pick up empty service containers at the Center, return those containers to the Silver Key kitchens in south Colorado Springs, pick up containers of hot food, and bring those containers back to the Center for serving at a noon meal.
